Farm track flex and leaf packs

Why soft tracks punish stiff packs.

Leaf packs on rutted farm tracks

Why soft tracks punish stiff packs. Mr Hannes Nieuwoudt works from our Germiston office, with showroom hours across second-tier malls.

On farm tracks, a leaf pack that is too stiff makes the trailer skip across corrugations and drive shock into hangers, U-bolts and the load. Flex comes from the right spring rate, shackle travel and tyre pressure working together, not from adding extra leaves for the sake of it. Around Germiston and on gravel routes out to yard roads, we look at axle load, drawbar height and how often the trailer runs empty versus loaded.

Pair this note with a trailer under Trailers and a haul under Hauls. The catalogue is a road equipment supplier operated by Astros Marketing (Pty) Ltd. Once your plate numbers and hitch height are ready, send them through our contact form.

Before the first gravel section

  • Leaf pack sits level under load
  • Shackles move without binding tight
  • U-bolts torqued after recent fitting
  • Tyres matched for gravel and load
  • Bushes show no oval wear marks

A farm trailer that spends half its life empty needs enough spring movement to keep both wheels planted over ruts and washboard. When the pack barely opens, the axle starts hopping and brake grip gets inconsistent on loose surfaces. After dusty Highveld runs, inspect between the leaves, at the centre bolt, and around the spring eyes for red dust packing and polished rub points.

Leaf packs on soft approaches

Soft entrances to lands and kraal roads load the suspension differently from a tar yard. The nose can rise and fall quickly as the tow vehicle drops into wheel tracks, so coupling height and rear shackle angle matter more than many drivers expect. If the trailer is often reversed through ditches or over berms, we note clearance around the equaliser, hangers and mudguards before changing spring count.

Not every rough-road problem needs a heavier pack. A thin, overloaded spring goes flat and stays there, but an over-sprung setup can crack brackets and shake lamps loose long before the steel looks tired. We record where the trailer runs, what it carries, and whether the harshness happens loaded, empty, or only on corrugations.

For related suspension notes, start in Axles and compare axle layouts with the spring rate in mind. If replacement parts are needed, open Kits for bushes, U-bolts and hardware that suit the running gear. Setup examples live in Gallery where you can view pack position, shackle stance and tyre clearance on working trailers.

Photos that help diagnose flex

Attach the coupling photo and the GVM plate shot. Name the route. Name the tow vehicle. That is how our contact form answers without a long chain. The office sits in Germiston with Astros Marketing (Pty) Ltd at 2 Makro Place, Sunnyrock 1401.

Send clear pictures of the trailer standing empty and loaded on level ground, plus close shots of each leaf pack from the side. Include the spring eye, shackle, centre bolt and U-bolt area, because wear patterns there usually show whether the pack is too hard, flattened out, or shifting on the seat. A short note with tyre size, typical payload and the roads used around the yard helps place the axle note in context.
