Load distribution over the axles

Axle balance under load

Nose weight, tongue sense, and why rear-heavy feels wrong. Mr Hannes Nieuwoudt works out of our Germiston office and also covers showroom hours at second-tier malls.

Weight placement changes how each axle carries the trailer on South African roads. Put too much mass behind the axle group and the hitch goes light, which invites sway on the N3 and rough municipal approaches. On a tandem or tri-axle unit, the goal is to keep the drawbar loaded correctly while sharing the burden across tyres, springs and brake components.

Pair this note with a trailer under Trailers and a haul under Hauls. The catalogue is a road equipment supplier operated by Astros Marketing (Pty) Ltd. Once your plate numbers and hitch height are ready, send them through our contact form.

Yard checks for nose weight

  • Load sits slightly ahead of centre
  • Coupling runs level under drawbar load
  • Tyres carry even side-to-side weight
  • Machine or cargo cannot shift rearward
  • Brake axles match the loaded route

A loader parked too far forward can overload the coupling and squat the tow vehicle at the back. Too far rearward, and the trailer starts to feel loose over patched tar, speed humps and yard entrances. Before leaving Germiston, check spring compression, tyre bulge and drawbar attitude with the trailer fully packed, not empty.

Tandem and tri-axle behaviour

On tandem trailers, equal share across both axles helps with braking stability and tyre temperature on longer pulls. A tri-axle setup gives more support for dense cargo, but it also punishes poor packing because one axle can scrub badly when the mass sits unevenly. That matters in tight South African yards where turns are short and surfaces are often broken.

Nose weight is not guessed from appearance. Use the load position, axle spacing and tow height together, then confirm with a proper check at the hitch. Small changes in pallet placement or water tank level can move enough mass to alter steering feel in the bakkie.

Start with Axles for axle layouts and brake options. Then compare trailer bodies that suit the cargo in Kits. For tie-down positions and loading examples, the Gallery shows working setups.

Sunnyrock load details matter

Attach the coupling photo and the GVM plate shot. Name the route. Name the tow vehicle. That is how our contact form answers without a long chain. The office sits in Germiston with Astros Marketing (Pty) Ltd at 2 Makro Place, Sunnyrock 1401.

Useful axle advice starts with the actual cargo, not a generic weight figure. Tell us whether the trailer carries bricks, plant, drums, fencing stock or mixed yard loads, because each one sits differently over the running gear. Coupling height, tyre size and axle count all change the final balance point.
