Brake Assist Pack setup
Set the Brake Assist Pack gain after coupling height is confirmed, then run short yard loops and log the first loaded brake response.
Setup notes for Brake Assist Pack
Brake Assist Pack setup starts with the trailer standing level behind the tow vehicle. Set tyre pressures to the working load, confirm the plug is seated, and check all lamps before moving off. On cold Highveld mornings around Germiston, run a few empty loops first so the controller, hubs, and brake response can be checked before the first road load.
Brake assist settings must match the axle layout and the gross mass you plan to pull, not the lightest run of the week. A utility trailer with a small machine on board needs different controller gain from a multi axle builder's trailer carrying steel. Mark the spare wheel, secure the breakaway cable, and recheck strap tension before the gate opens.
Take a clear photo of the first hookup with the plug, safety chains, coupling, and number plate visible. Save the brake controller setting used for that test so the next driver does not start from guesswork. If the pack was adjusted after loading, note the cargo type and axle position with the image.
Brake controller and hitch checks
Trailer balance affects how the Brake Assist Pack behaves on the road. Light garden refuse, bagged feed, timber, and compact plant all shift the braking feel and may need a different gain setting. Check each axle line individually, because one hot hub or soft tyre can make the brake response uneven under load.
- Plug locked before every road test
- Gain adjusted on empty yard loops
- Hub temperatures checked after loading
- Breakaway cable clipped clear of drawbar
Use the matching haul path and axle note when the tow vehicle or route changes. If the hitch height, plug type, or brake controller sits outside the usual bakkie setup, add those details through our contact form so the Brake Assist Pack notes can match the trailer combination.
Signs the setting is wrong
Stop and reset the Brake Assist Pack if the trailer snatches under light pedal pressure, pushes the tow vehicle through a turn, or drags a wheel on the first few kilometres. A better haul path may also be needed where steep yard ramps, loose gravel, or wet paving upset braking balance. MultiTrailer setups work best when the trailer and route are matched instead of forcing one setting onto every load.
If a handover happens through Clearwater, Cresta, Pavilion, Tyger Valley, Baywest, Mimosa, or Riverside, send the trailer model, brake controller reading, and the load type that was tested. That gives the next yard a proper starting point for the Brake Assist Pack instead of repeating the same checks from scratch.
